Course Set – 22556VIC Asthma & 22578VIC Anaphylaxis
Purpose
This course provides nationally recognised training for workers, or nominated workplace first aiders, from any industry sector and addresses the provision of care to adults and/or children in the workplace who are diagnosed as being at risk or displaying signs/symptoms.
** There are specific industries that require additional training such as childcare workers, school teachers and other related industries.
Entry Requirements
As a minimum, entrants to this course must have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3. An example of an ACSF Level 3 competency is being able to read and comprehend the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, use and respond to communication techniques to request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of a First Aid incident and use writing skills to complete incident reports.
Physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills
Online study options: The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

22578VIC – Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis
Assessment Activities
Practical demonstrations:
- Administer asthma medication (with a spacer)
- Administer asthma medication (without a spacer)
- Administer an adrenaline autoinjector for anaphylaxis
- Provide first aid for an allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
Documentation:
- Complete a First aid/Incident report form
- Complete a Risk Assessment
- Complete an Individual Management Plan, which includes a Communication Plan
Theory assessment:
- A written exam consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions.

Format
- Blended delivery – 3 hours (minimum) face to face course – with the addition of 1.5-hour self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course

- Legislative Authorisations : Conforms to the requirements of Victoria Occupational Health & Safety Authority First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, 1995

Learning Objectives
This course has been designed for individuals who are required to provide first aid to a person experiencing asthma and/or anaphylaxis until the arrival of medical assistance. This means being able to identify the triggers, signs and symptoms and follow the standard first aid procedures to administer medication according to condition.
Satisfactorily completing all requirement of this course provides the student with the ability to develop risk management and risk minimisation strategies for individuals diagnosed at risk of asthma and/or anaphylaxis in the workplace. This includes the development and implementation of pre-emergency risk assessment/management and the development and implementation of individual management plans.
Requirements for Successful Course Completion
- Attendance at all sections of the Asthma & Anaphylaxis course set is required
- Active participation in group activities and discussions involved in the training program
- Successfully complete progressive practical assessments. Progressive assessment of the competencies will be conducted throughout the course
- Successfully complete either a multiple-choice theoretical assessment, demonstrate practical application of skills or answer structures verbal questions in a one on one or group capacity by the end of the course
