HLTSS00068 Occupational First Aid Skill Set

Purpose

This Occupational First Aid course is delivered in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and it applies to those who are responsible for the maintenance of a first aid facility and management of first aid provision in the workplace or community setting. It covers the provision of advanced first aid, oxygen, advanced resuscitation and how to monitor the casualty after treatment and handover the casualty to medical professionals for further care.


Entry Requirements

Participants must have the physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration such as:

  • Assisting a casualty into the correct position and administering oxygen/medication
  • Performing 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor

Assessment Activities

Performance tasks and practical scenarios:

  • Perform CPR on an adult (incl. single and two-rescuer CPR, using a bag-valve-mask, select and insert an appropriate airway adjunct, manage oxygen equipment and use an AED to deliver at least one shock) 
  • Place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on a simulated first aid scenario
  • Perform CPR on an infant
  • Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
  • Manage a casualty with asthma
  • Manage a choking casualty
  • Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
  • Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
  • Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
  • Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
  • Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
  • Coordinate a multiple casualty incident
  • Manage a casualty with a life-threatening bleed and provide oxygen
  • Complete a first aid incident report form based on the life-threatening bleed scenario
  • Maintain resuscitation equipment
  • Conduct a workplace risk assessment
  • Develop a first aid response plan including strategies for management of incidents
  • Use a first-aid checklist to service a workplace first aid kit for supplies’ replacement and equipment maintenance

Theory assessment: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.

Format

  • Face-to-Face – 24 hours – with the addition of 2-hour self-paced learning to be completed prior to attending the face to face course
  • Online delivery with face to face Practical assessment – 14-16 hours of self paced online learning with a scheduled – 8 hours face to face practical assessment

  • Legislative Authorisations : Conforms to the requirements of Victoria Occupational Health & Safety Authority First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, 1995
  • Certificate Validity Legislature : No industry recommended renewal is identified on the certificate, employers are recommended to consult with stakeholders to identify appropriate training periods.

Learning Objectives

Lifesaving first aid interventions require instruction and practical training. Especially when it relates to potentially fatal illnesses and injuries such as those that involve cardiac arrest, severe bleeding, multiple casualty incidents etc. These situations carry a risk of further injury to the casualty and the first aider and it is imperative that training occurs to be able to know what to do and be prepared for a real-life incident.

Training will ensure the participant can effectively establish and maintain and facilitate the provision of appropriate first aid including first aid resources. Participants will learn about risk assessment to establish first aid requirements, using checklists for stocking and maintaining equipment such as resuscitation and oxygen equipment and first aid kits, following manufacturer’s instructions and completing documentation.

Specific licensing requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training, should be obtained from the relevant state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authority .

Requirements for Successful Course Completion

  • Attendance at all sections of the Occupational First Aid Course is required
  • Active participation in group activities and discussions involved in the training program
  • Successfully complete progressive practical assessments. Progressive assessment of the competencies will be conducted throughout the course
  • Successfully complete either a multiple-choice theoretical assessment, demonstrate practical application of skills or answer structures verbal questions in a one on one or group capacity by the end of the course
